CARES Website Outage – What Happened…

The CARES website, and email server, were “off the air” from mid-day on Saturday, 3/7/26 through mid-day on Tuesday 3/10/26.

After discussing the situation in an online chat with our hosting provider (namecheap.com), on Monday 3/9/26, I learned that the IP address that was stored in our DNS record had not been updated since we migrated the web site to NameCheap early in February this year. I communicated this information to Shawn Instenes AE7SI, the CARES AEC for AREDN and Data-Systems Support, and he made the necessary corrections that evening.

Shawn and I weren’t aware of the IP addressing issue because, after the migration, the website was working reliably for the remainder of February. It was somewhat surprising that this oversight hadn’t affected the website immediately after the migration.

There was a brief (unrelated) outage at the beginning of March, due to not having recently updated the domain provider with our contact information.

Anyway, now that (hopefully) all the t’s have been crossed, and the i’s dotted, we don’t expect any further issues with website availablility.

As always, though, if you’re experiencing any difficulty accessing the CARES website, feel free to contact me at CARES-Webmaster@clackamasares.org. Since the CARES email server uses the same domain as the website, it would be a good idea to also cc me at my non-CARES email address: markad7ef@gmail.com
